GAC AION UT 2026: New 320km Electric Car Could Challenge BYD and Geely

GAC is preparing to expand its electric vehicle lineup in Australia with a new, more affordable version of the AION UT, giving buyers another option in the rapidly growing affordable EV market.

The new variant is expected to arrive toward the end of 2026 and will feature a smaller battery designed to reduce the purchase price while maintaining enough range for everyday urban driving.

With an estimated 320 km of WLTP range, the new AION UT could become one of the most interesting affordable electric cars to watch in Australia.

A Smaller Battery With a Bigger Price Advantage

The biggest change is underneath the body.

The new AION UT will use a 44 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, compared with the 60 kWh battery used by the current Australian model.

The smaller battery is expected to deliver approximately 320 km of WLTP range.

Although that is significantly less than the roughly 430 km offered by the larger-battery version, GAC believes the reduced range can make the vehicle more attractive to customers who prioritize affordability over maximum driving range.

For drivers who mainly use their cars for commuting, shopping and city travel, a 320 km range can still provide plenty of flexibility for everyday use.

GAC Is Targeting First-Time EV Buyers

The strategy behind the new model is straightforward: make electric vehicles more accessible.

Australia's affordable EV market is becoming increasingly competitive, with Chinese manufacturers such as BYD, Geely and GAC introducing vehicles aimed at customers who previously considered electric cars too expensive.

The new AION UT is expected to become the entry point of GAC's Australian electric-car lineup.

By using a smaller battery, the company can potentially reduce manufacturing costs and offer a lower starting price.

GAC has confirmed that the new version will be cheaper than the existing AION UT, although the final price has not yet been announced.

Current AION UT Specifications

The current Australian AION UT is equipped with a 60 kWh LFP battery and a front-mounted electric motor producing:

  • 150 kW of power
  • 210 Nm of torque
  • Around 430 km WLTP range
  • Front-wheel drive

The upcoming 44 kWh model could receive a different electric motor.

In China, the smaller-battery AION UT is offered with a motor producing approximately 100 kW and 145 Nm.

However, GAC has not yet confirmed whether the Australian version will use the same powertrain.

That means the final performance figures for the Australian car remain to be announced.

A 320km Range Could Be Enough for Most City Drivers

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding affordable EVs is that every electric car needs a huge battery.

For many drivers, that simply isn't necessary.

Models such as the BYD Atto 1 and Geely EX2 are already targeting Australia's growing budget EV segment.

Geely's EX2, for example, uses a 35.3 kWh LFP battery in its Complete version and offers a claimed WLTP range of around 252 km.

If the AION UT can deliver approximately 320 km while remaining competitively priced, it could offer a compelling combination of range and affordability.

The competition will ultimately come down to price, equipment, charging performance and ownership costs.

Price Will Be the Key

GAC has not announced the official price of the new AION UT yet.

The current AION UT starts at around A$31,990 before on-road costs in Australia.

The new version is expected to sit below that figure, potentially pushing the AION UT closer to the country's growing sub-A$30,000 EV market.

However, any price below A$30,000 should currently be considered an expectation rather than an official figure until GAC confirms it.

If the company manages to combine a 320 km range with a genuinely low starting price, the new AION UT could become a serious competitor in the entry-level EV market.

Compact Size, Urban-Friendly Formula

The AION UT is designed as a compact electric hatchback rather than a large SUV.

That gives it a clear advantage for urban environments, where compact dimensions can make parking and maneuvering easier.
