UK Considers Easing 2030 Electric Vehicle Target

The United Kingdom is considering changes to its electric vehicle targets after automakers raised concerns about weak consumer demand, infrastructure challenges and supply-chain disruption.

The current Zero Emission Vehicle mandate requires manufacturers to increase the percentage of new cars sold as zero-emission vehicles. The target is scheduled to reach 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2035.

Three proposals could reduce the 2030 target to as little as 50%, while another option would keep the existing target but provide manufacturers with additional flexibility.

EV Demand Is Still Growing

Despite concerns about the pace of adoption, battery-electric vehicles represented 27.4% of new UK car registrations in July 2026.

The government is now consulting on possible changes to give automakers greater flexibility while maintaining the long-term transition toward zero-emission vehicles.

What It Means for Car Buyers

A softer mandate could influence the mix of electric, hybrid and combustion-powered vehicles available in Britain during the second half of the decade.

Automakers are watching the consultation closely as they balance investment in electric vehicles with changing consumer demand.
