China's Electric Truck Exports Surge as Diesel Prices Rise

China's electric truck industry is experiencing a major export surge as higher diesel prices encourage freight operators across Asia to consider electric alternatives.

According to a recent Reuters report, China's exports of heavy electric trucks more than doubled during the four months following the start of the conflict, reaching 16,823 vehicles.

Asia Becomes a Major Market

South and Southeast Asia accounted for around half of China's electric truck exports during the period. Shipments to South Asia increased more than fivefold compared with the same period a year earlier, while exports to Southeast Asia nearly tripled.

Rising diesel prices have played an important role in the change. Higher fuel costs are making the operating economics of electric trucks increasingly attractive to commercial fleet operators.

China's electric trucks have grown from almost zero in 2021 to around 30% of truck sales in the domestic market.

Sany Expands Its Electric Truck Business

Sany, one of China's leading electric heavy truck manufacturers, is increasingly focusing on international markets. The company has shifted some of its attention from Europe toward Southeast Asia and is developing lower-cost electric truck models.

In June 2026, Sany shipped its largest single order, consisting of 880 heavy electric trucks, according to Reuters.

Electric Trucks Become More Economical

The increase in fuel prices is shortening the time required for fleet operators to recover the higher initial cost of an electric heavy truck.

According to Sany's international marketing executive quoted by Reuters, the payback period for some buyers has fallen from around 28 months to approximately 18 months as fuel prices have increased.

China's Global Truck Ambitions

Chinese manufacturers are increasingly looking toward Asia, Africa and Latin America as new markets for electric heavy trucks.

The expansion is being supported by improvements in battery technology, lower vehicle costs and the development of charging and energy-storage solutions.
