2027 Rivian R1 Gets Major Updates

2027 Rivian R1 Gets Major Updates

VIBCAR | Car News | New Cars

Rivian is giving its flagship R1 lineup a series of important updates for the 2027 model year as the electric vehicle maker works to keep its premium R1S SUV and R1T pickup competitive in an increasingly crowded EV market.

The updated lineup brings revised trim names, new equipment and additional configuration choices. One of the most notable changes is the availability of second-row captain's chairs for the R1S, a feature Rivian says has been highly requested by customers.

A More Streamlined R1 Lineup

For 2027, Rivian is simplifying the way customers choose an R1 vehicle. Instead of relying primarily on motor-count names for the different configurations, the lineup is organized around Premium, Performance and Quad grades.

The new structure is intended to make the range easier to understand while still giving buyers a broad selection of performance and battery configurations.

The R1S continues to serve as Rivian's three-row electric SUV, while the R1T remains the company's adventure-focused electric pickup.

Captain's Chairs Arrive for the R1S

One of the biggest changes for the 2027 R1S is the option of second-row captain's chairs.

The individual seats create a center passageway that allows passengers to move toward the third row without having to fold down a second-row seat. This can be particularly useful for families traveling with children or carrying passengers in all three rows.

The new seating configuration reduces total capacity from seven to six passengers, but it adds individual armrests, cupholders and improved access to the third row.

The captain's chairs can also be folded to provide greater flexibility when carrying longer items.

2027 Rivian R1T Updates

The R1T pickup receives its own equipment changes for the new model year. Among the additions is a new 20-inch wheel and tire configuration designed to provide a balance between everyday driving and adventure use.

Rivian is also introducing a new exterior color called Esker Silver, giving buyers another option for customizing their electric truck.

The R1T continues to target buyers looking for an electric pickup with strong performance, substantial cargo capability and off-road potential.

Power and Performance

The 2027 R1 range continues to offer multiple electric powertrain configurations, allowing customers to prioritize efficiency, performance or maximum power.

The Premium version uses a dual-motor setup, while Performance models add another motor for increased output. At the top of the lineup, the Quad configuration uses four electric motors and is designed for buyers who want the highest level of performance available from the R1 family.

According to current Rivian information, the 2027 R1 lineup includes versions ranging from the 533-horsepower Premium configuration to much more powerful Performance and Quad models. The top-end versions are capable of delivering extremely rapid acceleration while maintaining the all-wheel-drive capability that has become a key part of Rivian's identity.

Range Remains a Major Selling Point

Range continues to be one of the most important factors when customers consider an electric SUV or pickup.

Rivian offers different battery and wheel configurations across the R1 range, allowing buyers to select a setup that better matches their driving needs.

Official EPA range estimates vary according to the specific configuration, wheels, tires and equipment. Rivian notes that real-world range can also be affected by weather, driving conditions, climate control and other factors.

Pricing

The 2027 R1 lineup remains positioned firmly in the premium electric vehicle market.

The R1T Premium starts at approximately $79,990, while the R1S Premium starts at approximately $83,990 in the U.S. market before taxes and additional options.

Higher-performance versions increase the price substantially, with the Quad models sitting at the top of the lineup.

Pricing and equipment can vary depending on configuration, destination charges and optional packages.

Why the Updates Matter

The 2027 changes arrive at an important time for Rivian. The company is expanding its lineup while facing increasing competition from established automakers and newer electric vehicle manufacturers.

The smaller R2 is also becoming an increasingly important part of Rivian's future strategy. That makes keeping the larger R1S and R1T attractive particularly important for the company's premium positioning.

Rather than completely redesigning the R1 models, Rivian has focused on refining the existing formula with more convenient features, clearer trim levels and additional equipment.

R1S vs. R1T

The R1S and R1T continue to target different types of customers.

The R1S is the better choice for buyers who need passenger space, three-row seating and SUV practicality. The new captain's-chair configuration makes the R1S even more appealing to families who frequently use the third row.

The R1T, meanwhile, is aimed at customers who want the utility of a pickup truck combined with electric performance and off-road capability.

Both models share Rivian's adventure-oriented design philosophy and electric architecture, but their body styles give them different strengths.

VIBCAR Take

The 2027 Rivian R1 updates are evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but they address several areas that matter to buyers.

The addition of captain's chairs is particularly significant for the R1S, while the simplified trim structure should make the lineup easier for new customers to understand.

At the same time, Rivian continues to offer impressive performance and multiple powertrain choices, keeping the R1 family positioned as one of the more distinctive premium EV lineups.

The biggest challenge will remain price. With starting prices above many mainstream electric SUVs and pickups, the R1 models must justify their premium positioning through performance, range, technology and utility.

Overall, the 2027 Rivian R1 lineup appears to be a thoughtful refinement of an already distinctive electric vehicle platform. As competition in the EV market intensifies, these updates could help Rivian maintain interest in its flagship models while the company expands its more affordable lineup.
