Mitsubishi unveils the all-new Pajero: Global launch in Tokyo and a return after 7 years; sales targets set for 2026 and plans for 100 countries by 2027; body-on-frame construction, 2.4-liter turbo engine, and SS4-II and S-AWC off-road and comfort systems

Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors officially unveiled its all-new Pajero SUV at a global launch event in Tokyo on Wednesday, marking the return of this iconic vehicle after a seven-year hiatus in the domestic market.

Sales will begin in Japan on December 17, 2026, following a global launch in Thailand in mid-October 2026 and Australia in early December 2026. Official pricing and full details will be announced on October 29, 2026.

The company plans to sell the vehicle in 100 countries starting in 2027, including markets in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Latin America, and the Middle East.

Design and Architecture

The vehicle features a robust, boxy body built on a body-on-frame platform derived from the Triton, and is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine.

Company CEO Keisuke Kishiura described the all-new vehicle as the "flagship model" of the brand's new generation, noting that it embodies the identity of Mitsubishi Motors.

"We have invested everything we have, including our technology, in the new Pajero," he said at the launch event.

A Major Evolution

The Pajero was first introduced in 1982 and developed into a versatile four-wheel-drive vehicle capable of tackling diverse terrains. It combined reliable performance and off-road capability with passenger-car comfort.

It gained widespread popularity, particularly among outdoor enthusiasts, and was one of the models that helped fuel the booming RV market in Japan during the 1990s.

With total production exceeding 3.29 million units across its four generations, the Pajero has become one of Mitsubishi Motors' most iconic and recognizable models, cultivating a loyal following in more than 170 countries and regions worldwide.

Based on the SS4-II system, honed in the world's most challenging environments, the all-new Pajero is enhanced with the S-AWC system, delivering exceptional all-around capabilities.

With a powerful yet easy-to-control engine, an extremely rigid ladder frame, and a specially developed suspension system to maintain perfect tire contact with the ground, the all-new Pajero boasts reliable off-road performance, along with easy driving and a comfortable, smooth ride on paved roads.
